Here’s my guide to Corset Silhouettes. Poorly drawn by me! =D

Victorian Hourglass: The standard shape people think when they hear “corset”. This is the curvy oh so feminine shape ladies aim for when they choose to start corsetting.

Wasp waist: A rather forgiving shape, I think. The shape gives room for one’s ribs while still bringing the waist. This is a good choice for those concerned about their ability to breathe in a corset or just aren’t interested in attempting to reshape their floating ribs.

U-Shaped: This is the most common shape you’ll find on discount corset sites such as CorsetDeal.com or even Timeless Trends. This is a very gentle, more modern silhouette that doesn’t work well for tight lacing, I personally think. It goes smoothly under modern cut clothing for those wanting not to bring in their waist much, but are interested in looking slimmer in a lovely blouse or dress.

Cone Shaped: My personal favorite, this shape brings in your floating ribs making a very smooth transition to your small waist. If trained properly, I think it can be a very dramatic change and can be longer lasting without the corset due to the change in your rib shape.

Pipe-Stem Waist: NOT FOR BEGINNERS. This corset is like the Victorian Hourglass, except it adds 1/2 inch up to 2 inch of a pipe-like shape in the middle. This pushes your rib cage up and lengthens your waist section. It takes a very very long time and lots of work to attempt such a demanding corset.

Edwardian S-Curve: You won’t find many corset makers who will make this exact corset due to the danger it is to your spine. I love the silhouette created by this corset, it pushes your chest out, curving your lower back in dramatically to push out your ass making a very lovely appearance, I think. It gives a sort of sway-back to it’s wearers. You will only find inspired versions of this corset.
